Difference between Passive and Active Harmonic Filter (APF)
Harmonic distortion is a significant issue in power systems, affecting electrical energy quality and reliability. As power systems become more complex with the use of nonLinear Loads, addressing harmonic distortion has become essential.
Harmonic filters are used to reduce harmonics, with two main types: Passive Harmonic Filters (PHFs) and Active Harmonic Filters (Ahfs). Both are effective in mitigating harmonics but work differently and suit different applications.
Passive Harmonic Filters (PHFs)
PHFs are cost-effective solutions designed to reduce harmonic distortion using a combination of resistors, capacitors, and inductors. These components create a low-impedance path for harmonic currents and are tuned to specific frequencies to filter out unwanted harmonics.
Working Principle of PHFs:
- Frequency Selectivity: Tuned to specific harmonic frequencies to filter out targeted harmonics.
- Parallel Connection: Connected in parallel with the load, diverting harmonic currents away from the power supply.
- No Active Control: PHFs operate without external power or active components.
Advantages of PHFs:
- Cost-Effective: More affordable than AHFs, ideal for fixed harmonic issues.
- Low Maintenance: Minimal maintenance due to the absence of active components.
- Simple Installation: Easier to install compared to AHFs.
Disadvantages of PHFs:
- Limited Flexibility: Cannot adapt to changing load conditions or evolving harmonic profiles.
- Ineffective for Dynamic Loads: Struggles with dynamic or variable harmonic loads.
- Voltage Drop: May cause voltage drops affecting system efficiency.
Active Harmonic Filters (AHFs)
AHFs are advanced devices designed to provide real-time harmonic mitigation. They use power electronics and control algorithms to monitor and neutralize harmonic currents by injecting equal and opposite currents. AHFs are capable of precise harmonic compensation under varying system conditions.
Working Principle of AHFs:
AHFs are onnected in parallel to the grid, can promptly detect harmonics in the grid, generate a counteracting compensation current through the converter, and dynamically filter out the harmonics. The operation of the AHF is unaffected by various load types and grid structures.
It does not produce harmonic oscillations within the system, thereby achieving perfect harmonic control under different loads. The AHF can fully achieve dynamic reactive power compensation, control capacitor switching, and ultimately improve the power factor of the grid.
Advantages of AHFs:
- Real-Time Compensation: Immediate harmonic correction, ensuring stable power quality even with fluctuating loads.
- Flexibility: Adapts to changing system conditions and varying harmonic profiles.
- Enhanced Reliability: High reliability with advanced monitoring and control systems.
- Comprehensive Power Quality Improvement: Also provides voltage regulation and power factor correction.
Disadvantages of AHFs:
- Higher Initial Cost: Higher upfront cost due to advanced technology.
- Complex Installation: Requires specialized expertise for installation and system integration.
